Ken Gellatly Dead In Plane Crash That Also Killed Jim Prentice

A "very special man."

A popular Calgary eye doctor has been identified as another victim in the plane crash that killed former Alberta premier Jim Prentice.

Dr. Ken Gellatly was remembered as a "very special man" after his death was confirmed Friday.

Gellatly, an optometrist at Calgary's Downtown Vision Care, was a friend of Prentice's and father-in-law to the politician's daughter.

Gellatly earned a doctor of optometry degree from the University of Waterloo and became a Fellow of the American Academy of Optometry (FAAO) in 1988, his online biography reads.

He and Prentice had gone to Kelowna, B.C. to golf and meet with friends before travelling home to Calgary, Global News reported.

Their plane left from the B.C. city on Thursday night and headed for Springbank airport, just outside of Calgary. The aircraft, a Cessna Citation, went down around 10:30 p.m.

Gellatly, Prentice and two other people were killed. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.

Friends, professional colleagues and former patients posted tributes to the optometrist on social media.
