Ruth Negga, Brie Larson Among The Stars To Wear ACLU Ribbons

Best actress nominee Ruth Negga and best song nominee Lin-Manuel Miranda were both spotted wearing the ribbon.

The Oscar red carpet is no stranger to fashion statements. But, as it turns out, it's also a pretty good place to make a political statement.

Some of Hollywood's biggest names are sporting light blue ribbons in support of the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU).

Ruth Negga, one of this year's Best Actress nominees, sported the ribbon.

Negga's film Loving, is about the legal battle that ultimately legalized interracial marriage in the U.S. The ACLU represented the couple and ultimately won their battle in the Supreme Court.

Speaking to etalk's Ben Mulroney on the red carpet, Negga said wearing the ribbon was a natural fit for her, as "...the [ACLU] are actually a very big part of our film, they helped to change the constitution of America for the better, and I'm a very big fan of theirs."

Best song nominee Lin-Manuel Miranda, who brought his mother to the ceremony, also wore the ribbon.

"Well, they're fighting the good fight right now," said Miranda, about the ACLU to Mulroney. "A lot of people are watching TV right now, it felt like the perfect combination."

Miranda was joined by Moonlight writer and director Barry Jenkins in pinning the ribbon to his lapel.

Brie Larson, a presenter tonight and last year's Best Actress Oscar winner, proudly tweeted that she would be supporting the ACLU prior to walking the red carpet.

The ACLU is one of America's foremost civil rights organizations, and reached out to tonight's major nominees as part of their "Stand With The ACLU" campaign, according to Pret-A-Reporter.
