Canucks Give Canada Hope for Cup's Return

Posted: 05/26/11 08:00 AM ET

It's been a long time, Canada, 18 years to be exact, since Patrick Roy led the Montreal Canadiens to a Stanley Cup win back in 1993. That means an entire generation of hockey fans have no first hand recollection of a Canadian-based team winning the Stanley Cup.

Hockey is Canada's game and the country has never gone this long without a cup winner. The previous drought was just seven years, from 1935 when the now defunct Montreal Maroons won their last Stanley Cup, until 1942 when the Maple Leafs brought the cup back home to Canada.

The Stanley Cup used to practically be the property of Canadian-based teams. Between 1956 and 1969, the cup was won by either the Maple Leafs (imagine that) or the Canadiens team 13 times in 14 seasons. Even after expansion, Canada still had a pretty good hold on the cup with the Canadiens, Oilers and Flames and keeping the symbol of hockey supremacy home in Canada 11 times in 15 seasons between 1976 and 1990.

There have been several near misses since 1993. The Canucks came within a game of giving Canada two straight cups in 1994 when they reached the finals before falling to Mark Messier and the New York Rangers in seven games. Two years later, the Colorado Avalanches won the cup just one season after relocating from Quebec City. In 2004, the Calgary Flames reached the finals and fell in seven games to a team from America's "Sunshine State," the Tampa Bay Lightning. Post lockout, two Canadian teams reached the finals in back-to-back seasons with the Edmonton Oilers making a Cinderella run in 2006 before falling to the Hurricanes and the Ottawa Senators losing to the Anaheim Ducks in five games in 2007.

The Vancouver Canucks have now reached the Stanley Cup Finals for the first time since 1994. Unlike past Canadian-based teams to reach the Stanley Cup, the Canucks will be the favorite as they had the league's best record this year and have a very deep and talented team.

But some people in Vancouver have raised questions as to whether or not the rest of the country would support the Canucks the way they united to root on the Sens, Flames and Oilers in past years. Heck, Edmonton and Calgary have one of the most intense rivalries in the NHL and yet, people in Edmonton were seen wearing red and pulling for the Flames in their intense battle with the Lightning.

Some in the Vancouver media have said that since the Canucks play most of their games after so much of the country has gone to sleep, the team has been virtually ignored by Canadians who live in the eastern 2/3 of the country.

That almost certainly won't last in the Stanley Cup Finals. The Canucks represent Canada's best chance in 18 years to bring the cup home. The nation won't ignore that fact. Being out west didn't stop Canadians from rallying around Vancouver at the last Winter Olympics and won't stop them from rooting for a Canadian team from bringing Lord Stanley of Preston's Cup back home to Canada. Hockey fans in Canada have waited long enough...

We here in the West do not worry about how the Easterners think or feel. We are all Canucks.

All the playoff games have been scheduled for 5:00 Pacific time to reach all markets...except for the Vancouver fans who are finding creative ways to leave work early!!

It is a bit odd. I think 6 PM Pacific time have made a bit more sense--allowing fans in the West to get home from work and not keeping fans in the East up TOO late....

I heard Manny Malhotra was cleared to participate in full practice. Is there a chance he might play in this series? That would be a boon to Vancouver's already solid chance in this series.

There is a good chance Manny Malhotra will play in the series which is almost miraculous. The biggest thing Manny will add is his faceoff skills. He was 2nd in the NHL on faceoffs this season. MM is a great playoff type player.

Thanks Brad. Malhotra is also a great player on the PK.

Just a question, how can a team with half the Canadians the Bruins have be Canada's team? Plus Vancouver is dubbed "Hongcouver" for good reason, most of the people in Vancouver aren't even Canadians.
02:38 PM on 05/31/2011
So, what you really mean is, it's impossible to be a real fan unless you were born in Vancouver? or you can't be Canadian if you're not white?

Well said JumperPilot. One of the great things about Canada is that people from all backgrounds, faiths and races are welcome.....

I said nothing about their race, but you can't be Canadian if you aren't Canadian. I was pointing out the number of residents that are not Canadian citizens

and I also never said you had to be from Vancouver to cheer for them, I'm saying they aren't Canada's team because they are barely Canadian themselves

You have obviously never attended a Vancouver Canucks game where people of all races are represented.

Flagged for being such a racist, ignorant comment. Canadians come in all colours, cultures and backgtounds a fact that Vancouverites are proud of!

Good to see you're still here, Brad. At first, Canadians were cool to the idea of supporting the Canucks. That's probably due to their exposure to the Canucks during the regular season, the time the games come on and the Canucks' playoff history. But, judging from the TV ratings for Game 5 I'm guessing that's all in the past. Go Canucks!!!

You won't get rid of me that easily opoprobrious. I think fans will get behind the Canucks once the Cup Finals begin and they watch on CBC. With the Finals being the only game in town, games won't be starting at 10 PM or 10:30 PM in the East, so that will help.
08:23 AM on 05/27/2011
Honestly Brad, you should have done your homework before 'guessing' about start times. (Ironically, only adding to the 'virtual ignorance' referred to in the article). All games start at 8:00 p.m....Eastern. Means 5:00 for us on the west coast. Which I guess means Ontario IS the center of the universe.

First let's see if they get past Tampa Bay. The momentum swings in this series--not just game by game but practically shift by shift--have been unreal.

This year is different. In past years the Canucks didn't have a team with this much talent and depth. They also didn't win the regular season title before. Vancouver has this all but wrapped up.

You're so right. How could I ever have assumed that previous Canuck teams with players like Glen Hanlon, Tiger Williams, Trevor Linden, Stan Smyl, Toni Tanti, Pavel Bure, ........(do I really need to continue?) had depth.

(I hope you detect the sarcasm in the above.)

Vancouver definitely has the deepest team in the league this year and the most talented. But the most talented team does not always win...Tim Thomas is certainly capable of stealing a game or two in a short series and the Bolts 1-3-1 trap could also make things interesting. The Canucks definitely would be the favorite against either team, though.

Yup, including the end of the world. 8) (Unless you listen to a certain pastor who will remain nameless.)

BTW, full disclosure. My Fave team has ALWAYS been the Habs, then the Bruins (I had a crush on Bobby Orr when I was 6), so I won't be rooting for the Canucks unless Tampa beats the Bruins. I will however wish them good luck, and good health through the series.

Hey, even Bettman is pulling for the Canucks. Gary loves hockey in cities that don't have snow in the winter.

He feels if he can just get the hockey season to be played in the summer, them sun-belt teams would be profitable, even if the fans came just to get cooled off ...

Gee Drak,

Obviously you weren't in Vancouver for the Olypics last year.

Please stop trying to paint Vancouverites as selfish and whiny. I assure you we are not. I have lived in Vancouver my entire 53 years, born here, yes! We all have friends and relatives across our great nation and everyone here welcomes the rest of out great nation to cheer us on. Haven't you heard us sing the anthem before every game? We sing "Oh Canada" not "Oh Vancouver". I might also remind you that this is a place made up of more than 51% different ethnicities, we are an inclusive society. So to the rest of canada, we welcome you support and your highest leap to our bandwagon.

Thanks bubblecut. Well said. I think most of Canada will jump on the bandwagon although as Jiggs McDonald said when I spoke to him yesterday, it may take a game or two for the full force of it to be felt.

What the deuce are you talking about? I didn't say one word of what you just wrote regarding Vancouverites being selfish and whiny. What I did say, is that I and many others feel the Vancouver Canucks are not Canada's team, period. They are Vancouver's NHL franchise, not a national team. You have friends and relatives cheering them on? Good for you, I have lotsa of friends and family members that are cheering for them as well as those that are not. But, this is not Team Canada.

Morevover, the Canucks have absolutely nothing to do with the Olympics, not sure what your point is there. And, all Canadian teams are privy to the National Anthem before every game. What does that have to do with anything? BTW, where do you think I live? I live in the same location you do. But, the season started for me in October like it does every year, how about you?

The Canucks are not Canada's team, they are Vancouver's team, period. It doesn't matter if Vancouver is based out of Canada, there are Canadian, American and European players on both sides of the border. Yes the Canucks will most likely win the cup, but if you're a hockey fan that cheers for a specific team other than the Canucks you're nothing but a bandwagoner if you've decided to jump on board and cheer the Canucks as Canada's hope. No thanks.

I think a lot of people do have national pride. Seeing people in Edmonton pulling for the Flames a few years ago spoke volumes. If Oilers fans can root for the Flames (and visa versa), then anything is possible!

No. You might not like my answer, but here it is. I cheer for my team and my team alone, and would not consider my team Canada's team if they made it to the final, even though they are based in Canada. Those of us devoted to following hockey for the entire year typically cheer for one team and one team alone, and don't jump on another team's bandwagon trying to convert it into some form of national spirit. Yes, there are Canadians that want to cheer for Vancouver as Canada's team but I doubt these people are serious hockey followers, they are typically fairweather fans. For them the season just started during the playoffs. For Vancouver fans, this is your team, and yours alone. This will be your cup. Canada's team is Team Canada.

the loss was still a bit too raw for me to show up last night at my son's baseball game, deep in Sharks territory here in south San Jose, already sporting my Canucks shirt - but I warned the other dads that my allegiance must now hang with the Canadian team.

A lot of Canucks fans came down to San Jose to attend the two games there. I think this was one of the closest 5 game series I have seen in a long time. If the Sharks had finished off the Wings in 5 or 6 instead of 7 games, I bet they would still be playing against the Canucks. Either way, Vancouver was clearly the better team and they deserve to be where they are: playing for the first Cup win in franchise history.
