How to Build Your Perfect Wardrobe

Do you have lots of clothing in your closet but feel you have nothing to wear? Most of my clients answer "yes" to this question. Each and everyone one of us from CEOs to stay at home parents have been faced with this dilemma.

Yet, most people rarely take the time to find what's required in order to have a well balanced wardrobe. Your wardrobe should work for you -- creating a "put together" look effortlessly while also giving you an attitude of ease and confidence for wearing it. If you feel your clothing doesn't do this for you, chances are you've probably had some frustrating last minute shopping experiences attempting to find that 'perfect' frock for a special occasion.

What's shocking is 90 per cent of what people first notice about you is your clothing and grooming. Think about it; how many times have you "sized up" how someone is groomed and put together? Clothing and grooming is not only important for first impressions, but can have an impact on your body language and gestures, also. How many times have you gotten a new outfit, haircut, or makeover and can feel a shift in how you carry yourself as a result? All of a sudden, you may feel more confident -- smiling more often or striding (or for some strutting) differently; it's incredible how it affects us!

So, in order to make sure we have a positive impact on ourselves it's important we take time to build our wardrobe appropriately.

The way to get there: audit, plan and shop. Take a peak in your closet and take the following actions steps:

1) You want to remove everything that is not in the correct size. Things that are kept for the possibility of a size increase or decrease should be stored in another area as they are not being currently used.

2) Remove everything worn out.

3) Remove everything outdated. If you look outdated, it is assumed your job skills are also.

4) Remove everything not worn in a year. Don't keep things "just in case," if you do, pack them away in a separate area.

5) Remove everything that does not feel great when worn; remember, if you don't feel good, it will show on you!

6) Remove everything that does not enhance the image. If you aren't sure what works for you and what doesn't, hire a professional to tell you.

Now that you know what you have in your closet and can plan for things you need, the biggest questions now is, "what do I spend?"

Believe it or not, the suggested annual clothing investment for all clothing items (including inner wear, outerwear, and accessories) is 5-10 per cent of the gross annual salary or 5-10 per cent of what you desire to be your income(if you plan on moving up in your job). You don't want to be walking into a job situation wearing a $199 suit when the lifestyle requires something much higher.

Be classic or current in what you purchase and remember that you get what you pay for.

The bottom line is your clothing should make you shine in all situations while being appropriate at the same time. Remember, your clothing is there to work for you...not the other way around.

  • Tailor And Repair

    Don't let clothes in need of tailoring or repair sink further into the back of your closet. Get these pieces fixed ASAP so they can quickly rejoin your closet as wearable wardrobe options.

  • Put On A Show

    Invite your friends over and model any items that you are unsure about giving up. Having a few extra sets of eyes can help you make a final decision.

  • If It Doesn't Fit Let It Go

    We all have clothes in our closet for our ideal image of our body. But more times than not they sit in our closet forever untouched. Let go of clothes that don't fit. Instead of holding onto pieces that you want to wear when you slim down keep working towards your health goals and get excited to buy new clothes when you hit your target weight.

  • Is It Uncomfortable?

    Those sky high heels that you can only walk from the taxi to the curb in? If your feet shriek in horror at the thought of putting them on it may be time to let them go. Consider tossing itchy sweaters, pants that bunch in the wrong places, and skirts you are constantly tugging down. If you don't feel your best in something you are less likely to wear it.

  • When Is The Last Time I Wore This?

    If you haven't worn something in over a year that's a huge sign that you don't need it. Is the item out of style? Is it beyond repair? If the answer is yes it may be time to give it to a friend or donate it. If you still don't want to part with the item just yet put it in storage and if you don't seek it out within the next few months it's time to say goodbye.

  • Hang It Up

    Try hanging up clothes instead of folding. Folded clothes are more likely to be forgotten or lost in a packed wardrobe.

  • Get Creative

    For more challenging pieces in your closet take the time to figure out some ways you can incorporate them into an outfit. Put your favorite look on a hanger in your closet to eliminate styling stress when you're ready to wear it.
