Why Harper is the Teflon Robot

Posted: 03/13/2012 8:24 am

A lot of people expected the so-called "robocall scandal" to inflict some serious damage to the Conservative government's standing in the polls.

As NDP MP Pat Martin put it, "This is the kind of thing that brings governments down."

And it's easy to see why Martin and others might hold this view. After all, the media gave the scandal front-page treatment for weeks. Day after day, it seemed new allegations surfaced suggesting somebody associated with the Conservative party may have used fraudulent phone calls to misdirect and annoy voters.

Yet, despite all that negative coverage recent public opinion polls suggest the scandal has had little or no impact on the Conservative party's popularity: 37 per cent of Canadians polled said they would still vote for the Tories if an election occurred tomorrow -- unchanged since a poll taken last November.

So what happened? Why have the Tories emerged from all the bad press seemingly unscathed?

Well, the answer is pretty simple: Canada is a land of two nations.

And no, I am not talking about English and French.

I am talking about two other nations: the one I call "Political Junkie Land," and the other "Regular Canadian Land."

And even though these two nations co-exist in the same country they actually have very little in common.

Political Junkie Land, for instance, is populated with party partisans, political hacks, journalists, activists, and politicians.

It's a land where politics is the national sport. Political Junkie Landers love to discuss and debate policy and political process; they are fascinated with the "politics of politics;" for fun they read political opinion polls and watch public affairs programs. And they love to passionately debate each other over the minutest of political issues.

Regular Canadian Land, on the other hand, is a nation that's composed of average non-ideological, non-partisan Canadians. And they care about stuff that affects their daily lives.

They worry about paying for their kids' education; they are concerned about keeping their jobs and paying for their mortgages. They are not concerned with the inner workings of public policy and politics. They care more about NHL standings than they do about standings of political opinion polls.

Yet Political Junkie Landers erroneously believe that what matters to them must also matter to the residents of Regular Canadian Land.

And this brings us back to the "robocall" scandal.

As is to be expected this scandal is an extremely hot topic in Political Junkie Land. Hence all the resultant media coverage. And naturally the Political Junkie Landers assume other Canadians share their passion.

But do regular Canadians care about this stuff?

Answer: They don't.

In fact, all this sensationalized scandal news coverage just reminds them of why they tune out politics in the first place. They see it as a nasty business and they regard politicians in general as a shady lot.

As prominent Canadian pollster Nik Nanos put it, "I would expect that most people believe that all the parties engage in a lot of these unsavoury activities in one way or another. A lot of this has to do with the level of cynicism that exists out there. ... It doesn't move the numbers as much."

And that's why the robocall scandal has not hurt the Tories.

This not to say it has had zero impact.

Voters who hate the Conservatives now hate them even more; voters who like the Conservatives are rallying to their defence.

But the rest of the population cares more about the price of gas.

And this is why the Liberals and NDP had better think again if they are planning to make the robocall scandal the centerpiece of their anti-Conservative strategy.

It just won't work.

Indeed, if the next federal election features the Tories talking about the economy and the Opposition talking about robocalls, Prime Minister Harper will almost certainly win another majority.

And this will trigger more heated political debate in the nation of Political Junkie Land, a debate which the Regular Canadian Landers will, needless to say, completely ignore.

This Harper thing is no surprise to me being from Alberta. He manipulated Jack and the NDP to get the Liberals out of office because they were doing such a good job. What disappoints me most is the ndp decided to play political games with Harper with no regard for the Canadian people. Harper hates the Liberals, and since I can't stand him I will vote Liberal in the next election. That will include any byelection or provincial election.

Clearly the author is right. It is better to just forget the illegal and immoral actions of the Conservatives, you know, because we just don't care.

And this will make our democracy better how??

When will REAL journalists step up to the plate and do some serious investigations, instead of telling us the illegal actions of the fake Conservatives is nothing to concern ourselves with?

Because most Canadians are Brain Dead, just like my parents. Harper is the most dangerous thing in Canada and not enough people see it. He could be in power for life, another so call legally elected right wing dictators.

When 63% of the public is opposed to your government, in most normal democracies, that's a bad thing.

That's usually the end of it. But not in the magical "Regular (read:Conservative) Canada Land" that's he's blathering on about.

You sir, are exactly what's wrong with Canadian politics.

And FYI: almost those people still hanging with the Conservatives are also members of your so-called Political Junkie Land. They're the Conservatives base who would vote for Stephen Harper even if he killed a puppy on national television.

Real, non-partisan Canadians have been completely driven from the conversation by people like you, who claim to speak for them, but really just turn them off.

"opinion" (lecturing, hectoring, cynical, amoral) like this is actually a kind of voter suppression, designed to do exactly what you say - encourage people to stay away by (a) disgusting them and (b) telling them activism is hopeless and misguided and "not part of who we are". Obedience and acquiescence through antipathy. It may be legal, but it's just as immoral as calling people up and telling them to go do a different polling station.

Mis-citation of rigged opinion polls should be illegal...but then so should polls, period.

I think it was Woodrow Wilson; maybe it was Theodore Roosevelt. Someone from that era, I've forgotten right now...

Writers like Gerry inspire and gives oxygen to the ineptitude we live in. If democracy is a mere routine to gain power as opposed to a means to create a better world, we wallow with cons as leaders. Backwards as possible, incapable of making Government part of our great country's success. Neglecting abuse during elections is symptomatic to them. Progressives have better things to do than just whine about the way things are and flip the channel for better thrills, ordinary Canadians wanting jobs must work the system to the max, for bettering lives for all makes it better for them, this means thinking debating and participating in very hearty well exercised elections, not the farce they have become. Hey, Gerry worry about the game, that will make you feel good.

Gary, I am an ordinary Canadian who simply tries to keep myself informed. This is a very serious situation we have here. The Conservatives are using the same old tactics. Blame everyone else, never take responsibility for anything. Harper is not a Prime Minister of the Canadian people. He is a mean spirited man who will do anything to get power. Canada will be a lesser country because of him. I for one can't wait to see his back side leaving the hill.

What's got into those "political junkies", anyway? Why are they bothering the rest of us with their whining about democracy and fraud and fairness and stuff? Seems like we just want another beer from the fridge while our fat asses cut a permanent groove in the man-cave couch.

His "steady" poll numbers, registering a whopping 37% support amongst Canadian voters is seen as proof that Harper is the "Teflon Man"; wow! Only 63% of Canadians would rather he wasn't PM! What a stirring success - Mr. Harper must be proud.

Given that there's a "base" who would vote Tory under even the most grave accusations of vote-rigging, 37% is not a very big number.

If one's support is "holding strong" at 37%, and shows "little or no impact" from damaging revelations, it doesn't mean that Canadians haven't noticed - it doesn't change the basic mathematics: a majority were opposed to Harper's government before the scandal, and a still greater majority are opposed after it.

The Sponsorship Scandal also had the Gomery Inquiry. We're still early days on this one. The Sponsorship Scandal wasn't that big a deal either at the beginning.

We'll know in a few weeks whether this has legs or not.
