Montreal's Eugenie Bouchard is quickly becoming a Canadian tennis superstar. The 19-year-old became only the second Canadian to reach the semi-final of a grand slam tournament on Monday, when she beat Ana Ivanovic at the Australian Open.
Bouchard got gossipmongers going when she told a courtside interviewer that her dream date would be Justin Bieber.
"If you could date anyone in the world of sport, of movies, I'm sorry they asked me to say this, who would you date?" the interviewer asked.
"Justin Bieber?" Bouchard answered to roars from the crowd.
STORY CONTINUES AFTER SLIDESHOW
Of course, many thought that the question trivialized Bouchard's accomplishments as an athlete, and is indicative of the sexist treatment many female athletes get from the media.
Judging from Bouchard's embarrassed reaction, we think she might just be joking with that answer. Of course, she has expressed her support for Bieber in the past, telling Sports Illustrated last year that she "[respects] him because he came from nothing and he became this mega-superstar and he does have talent."
The New York Times also astutely points out that while Bouchard says she wants to date Bieber, she quoted from Drake in an earlier interview, saying "You gotta start from the bottom and now we’re here, right?”
Heck, maybe she just really likes her Canadian musicians.
