There's no question the annual Victoria's Secret Fashion Show gives us some major #hairgoals. And this year, model Maria Borges' decision to skip out on perfectly curled hair extensions in exchange for a more natural look helped broaden the appeal.
On Tuesday evening in New York City, the lingerie giant filmed their glamourous annual show which saw the 23-year-old stunner rock her natural, short hair. Not bending to the typical beauty standards of the catwalk, the Angolan model told entertainment news reporter B. Scott, "I told my agent I wanted to walk in the Victoria's Secret show with my natural hair. I was nervous, but I had to do it. When they said 'yes' I didn't expect it, but I was so happy!"
Earlier this year, the model, with the encouragement of Givenchy's Riccardo Tisci, decided to remove her long, straight hair extensions to embrace her natural cropped afro. In an interview with i-D magazine from August, the beauty discussed how cutting her hair short has allowed her to find her true identity as a model. She revealed, "Since I've gone natural, I feel younger and fresher. With my short hair I don't feel like I need makeup — maybe I'll use a little foundation, but I'll skip blush or lipstick."
On the runway, Borges, who strutted in the 2013 and 2014 shows with the traditional long, lush and bouncy VS curls, was one of the eight black models walking in this year's class of 2015, consisting of 44 models.. She dedicated her colourful Fireworks section wings to Africa with the hashtag #MBmakinghistory.
Thank you for being naturally you, Maria!
