Are Kids Who Watch Porn Sexxx-Obsessed?

Posted: 01/31/2012 9:23 am

According to statistics, most kids have viewed explicit online material by age 11. But because it's not exactly scientifically ethical to plunk kids down, make them watch hours of porn and ask them what they think, it's difficult to study the effect viewing this stuff is having on them.

Some have tried. In the CBC documentary Porndemic, they interviewed Edmonton's Sonya Thompson, whose graduate work focused on researching the effects of pornography on young people. Finally, I thought, some answers. Thompson got as far as finding out that by age 13 to 14, 75 per cent of kids had seen porn online. After that, her funding dried up. Seems that while we assume that viewing all this sexual imagery will automatically turn today's kids into a bunch of porn-addicted, sexually depraved, emotionally stilted adults, no one wanted to pay for the research to prove it.

The Swedes have gone there. They interviewed youth aged 14 to 20 about their experiences and perceptions of porn and found that more boys watch more than girls, girls watch it more as they get older, and generally with someone they are involved with. Not much new there.

A 2008 University of Amsterdam study found teens that watched more Internet porn had a more open attitude to casual hookups, one-night stands and a "recreational" view of sex. The researchers warned, however, that one did not lead to the other. That teens who are already more interested in sex than their peers are going to be more interested in finding sexual content on the Internet.

Last year, the Internet Safety Technical Task Force, created by 49 U.S. state attorneys general and a bunch of Internet-savvy folk, said in their final report that while "unwanted exposure to pornography does occur, those most likely to be exposed are those seeking it out."

They reported that kids' family dynamics and psychological makeup "are better predictors of risk than the use of specific media or technologies."

As Alex McKay, research coordinator for the Sex Information and Education Council of Canada and one of Canada's leading experts on adolescent sexuality said in an interview on the topic for Parentcental.ca:

"Kids in the 21st century are going to be exposed to sexually explicit images, and it's naive to think they won't be. The better way is to make sure kids are educated about healthy sex and are media literate. Any other approach is doomed to failure."

It's like fast food. Kids are exposed to it all the time and McDonalds isn't going away anytime soon. As such, we need to teach kids proper nutrition and how to develop a healthy relationship with food. And that the occasional fast food indulgence is okay.

I can't see how impressionable kids watching pornography can ever be okay. That is why responsible parents install filters on their computers. Online pornography is not even educational, it's not like they show loving, respectful couples having missionary sex. If a child is exposed to online pornography they are going to think it is normal for a woman to have sex with three men at the same time.

It just permits them to masturbate with less imagination ... What is intrinscially wholesome about the missionary position, do pray tell?

The missionary position ensures the perpetuation of the human race. And kids should be allowed to develop their imaginations and fantasies, and not be bombarded with hardcore stuff they are not psychologically capable of dealing with.

Re: compatibility. Almost all men are capable of being compatible with almost all women, if the women would. That is the only compatibility factor - her attitude - and that attitude can and should be discovered prior to marriage. Unfortunately, her attitude usually changes within 18-24 months, but that fact has very little to do with the man anyway.

By extension then, children exposed to violence in movies and on tv are more likely to think it's normal to kill or beat other people. Oh, that isn't the case? Why? Because they are also exposed to other influences and know the difference between reality and fiction. So, unless these young people have porn as their sole reference to relationships, it's unlikely they'll grow un as depraved sexual deviants.

That is why violent movies are rated R/NC-17 too, and conscientious parents don't allow young children to watch violent movies/TV shows either. Also, violence is openly talked about as a bad thing, but I doubt parents are going to explicitly instruct their kids not to have threesomes.

Nope, not okay, not occasionally ok, not ever ok.

I agree with you if you're talking about McDonald's. At least plunk down the extra twenty cents and go to Wendy's.

Can you explain why? That is, can you articulate some actual, tangible harm?

I'm not saying there ISN'T any such harm, I'm just asking why you make such a statement. WHY is it never ever ever okay?

The only naked woman that a man should look at is his own wife. Even undressing a woman with your eyes is bad - not ok - we're talking sin here. Doing wrong. Incorrect. Error. Mistake. Missing it. Sexual sins are harmful in a special way, because in addition to violating God's rules, they also harm yourself.
