Naked and Free on a Nude Beach

Posted: 09/08/11 10:32 AM ET

The summer is almost over but it's not too late to get naked: consider the nude beach.

Though perhaps leave your students at home so you don't end up like the group that I saw huddled at the entrance to the beach, a couple of them making a few steps forward, turning around and instantly clashing with the rest of the group who decided to follow. The older-looking person -- a teacher? -- shouted to go back. There was some nervous laughter, some oh-my-gawd exclamations and back they marched into the forest. Welcome to the nude beach, er, good-bye!

I have to admit the brat in me made me sit up and observe this from my nearby towel until I myself got observed. I'm not saying I caused them to leave -- I had nothing on the big-bellied guy with micropenis who was strutting about -- but I probably contributed to it. Freedom can be defiant. I didn't really want them to leave, but I knew they would anyway so why not show them some tits to speed it up? Before, I would've left too and, in fact, I almost did the first time I came to the clothing-optional beach. (I know, we Canadians, are so polite -- even rules are more like suggestions.)

Five years ago, I came undone on that same beach. I sat naked, head on my knees, arms around my knees, hiding my bits. I cried. In my head, real-life nudity was ridiculous, offensive, absurd. In my head, I was absurd, offensive in my nudity. I couldn't possibly expose others to it.

Something happened because I loved being topless and nude in my late teens and early 20s. It was possibly the relentless exposure to the airbrushed, pneumatic canons of beauty in media got to me after a while. Unbeknownst to my friend who took me there, the first time I came to the nude beach, I was not a young woman -- I was a monster with awful breasts and ugly tummy and thighs so unsightly that it was a surprise nobody fainted when I undressed. I even questioned my colouring -- I was no pale, pink-nippled beauty that I imagined people preferred to see naked. In short, the first time on that beach, I was Carol, the Monster, from Where the Wild Things Are.

But I'm the kind of person that likes to beat her monsters into submission.

So I went back to the clothing-optional beach repeatedly. I was interested in the absurd, especially absurd bodies, having been so obsessive about mine. I wanted to see wrinkles and sagging bits, hair tangling where you never see it tangling in modern porn. I wanted to look at penises and asses and I wanted to see breasts that weren't perfect half-moons or full moons, breasts that were just breasts with nipples that proved motherhood. I wanted to see scars and secret mistake tats. I never stared, but I'd glance discreetly and register. My looking was always connected to the process of affirming that I, too, was human and beautifully flawed. Eventually, as I satiated and looked less I settled into my own imperfect skin.

At the nude beach it's mostly gay men there, but occasionally you run into families or even single women. My mother said I was nuts to take my baby there -- it was just so abnormal. But what could be more natural, really? I've heard three nude guys have a lively conversation about the type of pear you can pair an Arugula salad with. Or the naked landlord in sandals who was shouting at his tenant, into the Blackberry. He said he was calling from his office and couldn't just leave in the middle of a workday to fix it, now could he? I saw a baseball-hat guy cordially crouching in front of every towel, with his penis dangling along the pen on the string attached to a clipboard. There was a petition on the clipboard asking to rephrase the "clothing-optional" parts of the sign. It was those seemingly absurd, "abnormal" moments that normalized being nude. And once I became comfortable and comfortably fully nude, I remembered what it was about it when I was younger -- freedom.

One time a group of what looked like Asian tourists emerged from the forest at the gate. Unlike the group I saw recently at the beach, these guys didn't turn around. They strode right across the sand. I didn't see any cameras but they were definitely there to look at us, the nudists. They walked slowly but efficiently, closely clustered. They were watching. Pointing. We were a zoo of sorts. Out of all the moments on the nude beach over the years, this one was the truly absurd one.

Thanks for such a refreshing and honest commentary.

For those of us - like me - who are true nudists or naturists, we understand fully that it is NOT about looks or being sexy -- or sex at all, for that matter. For most of us, it's more about the comfort, the freedom of not wearing clothes; the sensuality of being naked outdoors It's about letting go of fake modesty, and breaking down dividing walls. We understand that the human body is nothing to be afraid or ashamed of; nor does it have to look like Adonis or a swimsuit model to be beautiful and celebrated.

In my personal experience, nudists have often been the coolest, down to earth, unpretentious people I've known. I feel very safe around such people. There really is something special about people who are comfortable in their own skin, regardless of body type.

In terms of the sexual aspect, we understand that it is more incidental, and not the purpose for or motivation behind. Yet, any sex that does occur can be all the more special and genuine, because of the safety we often feel.

So, much kudos to all TRUE nudists/naturists out there. Let's celebrate!

Funny stories. When I first went clothing optional at a reservoir near my college (Cornell), I took awhile to get used to it also. Lots of gay guys, shy women, people of all shapes & sizes. After awhile the nudity novelty wore off. After several weeks of seeing the same people I got the courage to just nod agreement as we both walked by. The funny thing was that on campus one night there was a movie event happening. A very attractive female stranger was taking tickets and smiled at me. It wasn't until after the show while leaving that I had the shock of awareness that this was the same woman I always saw at the reservoir. I couldn't recognize her with her clothes on. It would be a nicer world where people can see each other as they fully are, not the masks that they wear.

Nude beaches are not about genitals.

Once you accept that, there isn't that much to it other than the rather liberating nature of the experience.

I have sunbathed nude at nude beaches (a few years back, in Key West) and it was quite pleasant.

Nudity has never been an issue for me, whereever I go in warm weather i manage to find the nude beaches and rsorts and proceed to strip. It really is enpowering to feel no false modesty and realize no one is looking at you....at least not boldly.

I would have to look into this much further in order to comment.

I have been a 'clothing optional' beach goer for 40+ years although the puritans are enacting laws to ban the practice altogether. The people who inhabit nude beaches are the most respectful, genuine, and free individuals I've ever has the pleasure of association. Being completely uninhibited is liberating and refreshing in an uptight world.

Didn't realize there was a move to ban them. We must not allow this to happen.

If I could afford to live comfortably in San Francisco that is the place truly free people should want to make a life. This is the only city that allows open public nudity albeit with a few reasonable restrictions. Recently a clothing optional spot in South Orange County CA (San Onofre trail 6) was closed to nude sun bathing although some continue the practice risking citation. What is it about the human body that makes some people sooo uncomfortable? All behavior is learned so the only prohibition I can think is a socialization of the puritan mindset. This is just one of the religious moralities I take personal offense. Certainly not synonymous with freedom.

Nude beaches are common in Europe. Visiting them quickly teaches one that being exposed to multiple naked people is not as titillating as one may imagine it when such a sight is forbidden. It is, in fact, tedious to watch so many slight variations of the same anatomical structure. Dressed people are much more interesting.

My favorite part of any European vacation is the nude bathing. It just plain feels good to have the sun and the elements on bare skin. Once you realize that you are hardly among a group of Sports Illustrated bathing suit models, it's wonderful. Every body type, every age, every range of inhibition is present and none of us care. Being outside unclothed is possibly my favorite thing. I even mow my lawn in th nude in the middle of the night (with a quiet pushmower, and only the backyard). And for the record, I'm middle aged and a bit fat, and I don't care!

I lived in New Mexico for 10 years and there was a resort that had pools for men and women. The first time I went into the building where the women's pool was, I saw all of these elderly Spanish women walking around nude. I was taken aback for about 10 minutes then I got into it. I went there for about 5 years and the structure burned. The owners built a "co-ed" pool but it was never the same. I went once and didn't go back.

I miss those ladies.

I know it is hard for those who see a liberal or an elitist behind every bush, but do try to keep up.
