Christy Clark's Impotence Joke About Ex Falls Flat

Posted: 03/11/2013 2:11 pm

Someone tweeted me a link to the Comox Valley Business Gazette story last week about B.C. Premier Christy Clark's comments on her ex-husband Mark Marissen:

A seasoned orator, as well as a veteran of a talk radio business where controversy and titillation are king, Clark delivered what was surely the highlight of the presentation only a few minutes in.

While struggling against a microphone that wouldn't stay upright, she commented, "I'm not going to say it reminds me of my ex-husband."

The comment was met with laughs by all and the most raucous ovation of the afternoon.

I did two things. First, I nearly choked on my coffee. This woman has no filter between her mind and her mouth.

Second, I tweeted it to Clark, Marissen and Diamond Isinger, the creator of the Madame Premier blog, to see what they had to say about it.

Since Thursday, the story is starting to pick up a little traction. The Times Colonist mentioned it with the headline "Is Christy Hitting Below the Belt?" and our good friend RossK did a great post titled ... Return to Milf Island?

Now, for those who might recall the Milfgate incident, while many people claimed it was the DJ's wrong, it was my contention that the premier had already set the standard for innuendo and titillating talk with her prior interviews with The Vancouver Sun sports section and appearances on Rock 101.

But alas, this latest limp joke really fell flat in my opinion -- no pun intended.

Not just because people like Isinger run to the premier's defence with cries of sexism and political double standards for women in politics -- and yes, both are real issues facing some women in politics -- but because Christy's ex is still very much in her life, co-parents their son with her, and very much defends her and her government on Twitter.

It makes me wonder, how the hell Clark can reconcile being offended at Richard Branson's naked kitesurfing invitation ("I didn't think it was very respectful"), with her comments about her ex-husband while dealing with a microphone that wouldn't stand up?

And if you want to talk about double standards, what would happen if a male premier made a joke about his ex-wife's sexual function ... or lack thereof ?

Do you think that he might be called -- gasp -- sexist?? More likely women everywhere would have more than a few nastier words than that, including Isinger, who would personally man the guillotine -- but because it's Clark, she gets a pass?

Come on. Frankly, the hypocrisy between what Clark says and what she does is stunning, dwarfed only by her inability to understand why she is so low in the polls.

It comes down to character and integrity -- unfortunately for Clark, voters seem to think she has little of either, and with limp jokes like this, it's no wonder.

Personal sexual jokes at someone else's expense have no place in a Premier's political campaign. It might have been funny at the time, and it would be prudish to make a big deal out of it in another setting (depending on your taste and relationship to the one on the brunt end of it). But, if women are looking toward equality and an absence of double standard between the sexes - this type of thing is inappropriate and unacceptable. In addition, there is an accumulation of other innuendo and "sexy me" projection, that does not resonate well at all.

There is a bar room joke and juke box song ..." the girls all get prettier around closing time..."But the rest of the joke is that in the morning when you wake up with your arm around her - you are actually looking at coyote ugly. So the guy is laying there thinking about chewing his right arm off to get away without waking her up. This is the analogy for those who think CC is getting prettier around closing time. Vote prophylactically!

Sex sells. She is the sexy, sunny, cute little girl Premier - but even so, it's kind of weird. Is it part of the campaign image or is it her own hubris?

How About This for a Summary - She is "Prostituting Politics"

How is it that numerous other candidates have been fired for making racist or sexist comments, and yet she makes a public sexist joke out of her own family? In previous posts that describe her comment as funny - it's not funny to make jokes at the expense of others, especially jokes of such a personal and sexual nature. Rejecting this, is not about being old and prudish, because we can all rest assured that sex and sexuality is not a modern phenomena. It is one thing to make an off-color joke in front of a few women in a bar, and even then it is distasteful since this man is the co-parent of her son. It is an inappropriate thing to blurt out because it is sexist. Men get seriously slammed for sexist comment. What makes her any different. Being a girl? She is campaigning for Premier, not sitting in a bar.

The ex-husband should sue! If he can make it stand up in court!

I don't even know where to start. Most of you sound like sexless old prudes. Well, guess what? You're on you're way out, and the younger crowd is on it's way in. If that's her way of engaging the younger crowd, so be it! It was funny - lighten up!

I guess you had to be there but could it be that the shaft of the microphone kept going between her legs whenever it started to fall over. If that was the case her joke would have suggested the opposite of impotence. I can't really fault her for that.

CC is nothing if not a hypocrite. We all know this to be true by the countless examples she has provided for the press. She's an unelected premier running in an election she can not win. The definition of insanity *S*
