How the Media Shattered the Man in the Mirror

Posted: 06/12/2012 10:42 am

It was seven years ago when the twelve jurors of Santa Barbara County liberated Michael Jackson of the heinous charges for sexual abuse, conspiracy and giving alcohol to a minor. Interesting, 12 jurors of the most conservative California County, with not a single Afro-American among them, after more than four months of the trial, hundreds of witnesses interviewed and 30 hours of deliberation, reached an unanimous "not guilty" decision on all 10 counts.

Except for this trial was declared a "trial of the century" and displayed media at their worst. Sensationalism, exclusivity, negativity, excentricism, chaos, and hysteria were some of the features. After all, that was the thing that interested them and us the most (and unfortunately there are few who do not fit into stated majority).

While working on the biography of Michael Jackson, a few weeks ago I spoke with his lawyer Thomas Mesereau, who was the most credited for the legal victory. We also talked about the media coverage of the case:

It was horrible. I learned very quickly that the media was the enemy, that the media had an agenda, and their goal was not justice, it was not fairness, it was not truth [...] Because the media likes things that shock people, they like drama, and to have him found guilty and have him hold of the jail would have made a great stories for them. So I didn't trust the media, I felt they were trying to sabotage me, I felt they thought I was an obstacle to them, and they also knew they could not seduce me or even find me. They could not find me in a restaurant, they could not find me in a bar, they could not try and put me in a compromising position

Although the media have not managed to put Mesereau in a compromising position, they did it with a few people that were close to Jackson. Statements of his ex-wife Debbie Rowe have been twisted and remodeled. The media chased the former employees from his Neverland ranch to find the smallest particle of doubt.

They have written about the so-called fact that he wasn't the father of his own children and looked back at his plastic surgery (publishing an increasing number of operations with each new publication), finding all that you might call "strange," "twisted" and "depraved." Bjork described it best in a 2003 interview: "...in the US right now, it's illegal to be an eccentric."

In the mildest sense the statements of people who defended Jackson were drawn from the context. The case of wrong information transmission was often. For example, when the heterosexual porno magazine was found on Neverland (Jackson admitted that occasionally leaf through such content) most of the media referred to it as pedophile material.

Many would say that we can't put all media representatives in the same mold. True, there have been several media outlets and authors who were following it objectively without any bias or prejudice, and reporting was based on court transcript and official documents, but they are, of course, a tiny minority. Our media (in Montenegro) have not been a part of that minority, but rather have served as a copy / paste mechanism which borrowed information from it's foreign colleagues, of course, only in the translated version.

And what to expect after these reports? June 13, 2005 came, and most of the general public
was surprised by the verdict after all they had read and heard in the media.

And a victim of the whole story? A 46-year-old musical genius, who has devoted his entire life helping others, without asking anything in return. Eventually he became a victim of people whose only motive -- money, of people who took advantage of his generosity and humanity, and those who were inventing sensational headlines in order to earn from the same.

Dear Luca,
Are you planning to write a biography of Mr. Jackson? If so, please tell me when you think it might be on the shelves.

Thank you for a great article!

Thanks for an eye opening article on the power of the media. It just confirms that we should read/listen to media reports with a grain of salt. Thanks, Luka, for this insightful article and good luck with writing your Michael Jackson biography.

Thanks, Luka, for reminding folks that it was the media that had Michael Jackson convicted before he even entered the courtroom.  It's people like Diane Dimond, Maureen Orth, Nancy Grace and others of their ilk who infected the minds of the public with their hatred and salacious reporting on Jackson.  This was their bread and butter and they couldn't afford to report the truth because that wouldn't sell to folks who love to see the fall of someone great.

Let's not forget Dimond's pal, DA Tom Sneddon, and his role in feeding the frenzy.  I will never forget Sneddon holding a press conference, laughing, acting jubilant and making the pronouncement "We got him!" as if this was a 3-ring circus and Jackson was a danger to society.

I'm happy that you are writing about the role that the media played in the destruction of a man's life...a musical genius...a humanitarian...man who only gave of himself and never asked for anything in return...thank you!

Paladin2467's comment speaks volumes for what we have become as a society. We like to think we are a civilized nation. No, we're not! As long as we believe it's acceptable behavior to treat another human being so callously, we are anything BUT civilized. Whlle we don't "literally" throw human beings to be devoured by lions in a barbaric, colliseum-esq spectacle, we seem to have no qualms about allowing the media (and ignorant members of the public) to lie and continue to perpetuate stories that have no truth. We subtlely eviscerate. Yes, I despair quite often thinking about what Michael Jackson endured. Studying his life for the past three years has convinced me he was "crucified", tortured, senselessly. He was a genuinely compassionate, caring human being who really wanted to make our world a better place and he did so, unselfishly, giving the world joy through his wonderful music and exciting entertainment. A brutal, mass-murderer has received more respect. Do we not see the blatant hatefulness in our behavior?

We should despair when thinking of how much this man endured in his life. The press destroyed him on the altar of sleaze and sensationalism - just so that they could make an extra buck. Thank you Luka for being brave enough to put your head above the parapet and stand up for someone who was wrongly judged. Only when people associate the events and malpractices described in the current Levenson enquiry, with the perpetual harassment and disgusting methods used by the press in order to get their Michael Jackson story, will this man start to be respected. The press and the public in unison twisted and abused this mans reputation. Yes, he was eccentric in some ways but this adds colour to life, it should not be crushed. As an artist he should have been greatly respected, not furtively moving from one home to another, fearful of the lives of himself and his children. Until a time when society views the hardships that the press instilled in this mans life and recognises the damage that was deliberately carried out for a story, we need to look closely at who we are and what we represent and what we did. Most of all, we need to look closely at what we still continue to do.

Paladin2467.....Thank You! A powerfully thought-provoking comment. It makes me wonder when we look in the mirror, do we really "see" that person looking back at us?

Amen, Luka! Thank you for your article reminding the public about the media hatchet job that was done on Michael Jackson. He sure wasn't treated kindly in his later years on this earth.

Media is a Big Business and its one goal is to survive, grow and make money for its shareholders. It has no morality, only the need to survive and prosper. Anti-Jackson sentiment and hatred filled media coffers for decades and 'made' careers for many cut-rate tabloidists, including several particularly loathsome examples mentioned in these comments. Should the winds change and it becomes profitable to present a clear-eyed and thoughtful panorama of Michael Jackson's very big life as artist, man, parent and humanitarian -- the same media will spare no expense to assign the professional crème de la crème to the task. The sickly sweet fragrance of greed that drove media mad to destroy Jackson will be the temptress driving media to vindicate him in spite of itself. And, media will do it with great gusto, a straight face (both of them), and selective amnesia. What a grand flip-flop for the books. Mr.Jackson, deservedly, gets the last laugh!

Well done, Luka. Few can step into the role of an ethical, respectful journalist. Congratulations! You did it. I for one am looking forward to your book. Bless you!

Thanks for helping to expose the Truth about the Tabloid Media. Michael was Innocent.

I am feeling a lot of mixed emotions after reading this wonderful article. I would love to see a global documentary in every cinema like 'This Is It' for the whole world to see, but who is going to produce and finance it? Perhaps I am wrong to feel negative and not very hopeful, but so much is out there still to denigrate Michael Jackson despite vigorous protests, it breaks my heart. He was such a fantastic person who beat tremendous stress which may have caused his vitiligo and lupus, personal attacks by the Press and a corrupt DA, constant hounding by paparazzi, and extortion attempts, to give the world his musical genius, love and generous humanitarian contributions. He so deserves such recognition.

Thank you for writing such a truthful and factual article about how damaging and cruel the media can be. The media/tabloids bullied, vilified, dehumanized, mocked and stalked Mr. Jackson for over 3 decades. The tabloid stories, media innuendo, and salacious gossip that has been perpetuated for decades about Michael Jackson has become so in-grained in our culture that it may never completely go away. People need to stop being media-zombies and start to think for themselves when it comes to Mr. Jackson. He was a vigilant, ardent champion of children all over the world. He gave a voice to the voiceless. He wanted to help people and heal our planet. Hopefully we will continue to see more articles and headlines like this one.

Mr. Neskovic, thank you for respecting our intelligence. Trashy "so-called" journalists jumped (and still do) on false, sensational stories to sell crap or boost their ratings back then (and today), but you choose to stick to the truth and the facts. I can wait for your book, and I would surely enjoy a documentary too, to replace the "mockumentary" done by this dishonest, cupid crook Martin Bashir networks like to show at this time of the year.. It takes courage to write about the unethical and unprofessionnal "work" done by people supposely there to inform. It's important to expose that dramatic failure in our democracy; this dangerous path will surely destroy other people's lives in the future.
