It's a pretty memorable video.

For children and young adults with autism, they are 40 times more likely to die from injury. More than 40% of these deaths occurred in their homes or residential institution and the last sickening stat I'll throw into this cesspool of great news is that suffocation, asphyxiation and drowning are the leading three causes of fatal injuries in people with autism.

After all, you can hardly judge a book by it's cover, so why judge an entire party only on it's leader? As luck would have it every NDP MLA talked openly about anything we asked, and they all had issues they were passionate about.
For many children, the beginning of a school year might also mean being home alone until their parents arrive home from work. If your child is old enough and comfortable being home alone, you'll want to take steps to ensure they're safe and sound.

The news broke earlier this week that Karla Homolka has been living in the Quebec community under the name Leanne Bordelais with her three school-age children. Parents from the community are outraged, and perhaps understandably so.

Don't ever think it will never happen to you, because it can, it might and it could even happen when you're sitting right there with your kids. Get rid of those small choking hazards. Just because they haven't swallowed one yet doesn't mean they won't. You just never know when.

As a mom and doctor, I want to ensure my kids and your kids are as safe as possible, as often as possible. I work in a busy emergency room and from time to time have the responsibility of caring for unlucky children who accidentally ingest caregiver's medications, sometimes with dire consequences.

The reason I bubble wrap my kids is because of other parents and my neighbours, not because of malicious predators. I'm more worried about accidents than premeditated violent crime.
The December, 2012 shooting at the Sandy Hook Elementary School that claimed the lives of twenty children and six adults shocked the world. The call for greater school safety following this tragedy led to virtually every state legislature in the United States introducing new laws to make schools safer.

The new Ontario health and physical education curriculum, which has been the topic of much anger and debate, has the health and safety of all of our children as one of its primary goals. While I agree that children are in need of protection, I would like someone to explain how refusing to educate children could in any way protect them. Certain adults are keeping their children home to protest the new curriculum that will be introduced this coming fall. What will happen if we divide our students into two groups -- those who receive sex education and those who are being "protected" from it?

It’s a lesson most parents try to drill into their children from an early age -- don’t talk to strangers. But if a stranger approached your child with an adorable disarming puppy, would he or she be a...

The dogs were a bit ahead of us but within sight. Suddenly, George yelped and I knew he was in trouble. The dogs had been lured to a baited kill-trap and George's head was caught. He died a slow death while I struggled unsuccessfully to free him.

While 58 per cent of us walked to school when we were kids, only 28 per cent of our kids are doing the same today across Canada. But I believe walking to school gives kids a sense of community. They get to know their route. Their neighbourhood, literally, becomes their stomping ground. It also teaches them to not be lazy and just jump in the car whenever they need to go somewhere.
The boy -- while certainly inconvenienced and perhaps disconcerted about being on his own in an airport at night -- was safe. It's not by definition a traumatic or "bad" thing for kids to be exposed to uncomfortable situations every now and again, or to be subject to something outside of their comfort zone.
Into every childhood there must fall some skinned knees. Some bumps and bruises and yes, maybe even some crutches. The "be carefuls" I hear in the park make my heart sink a bit. When we set our little ones down in the sand, should we check for choking hazards or should we should hand them a shovel and tell them to dig to Middle Earth?
