It happens to everyone as we get older. Either you have kids or your friends have kids. But the one factor that a lot of people seem to forget is that children aren't for everyone. That doesn't mean your friendships are doomed. There are actually a few tricks you can do to look like a hero to your parenting friends, with limited child-you interaction.
There's a divide in our culture between childless people and people who are parents. I think we need to support our parent friends more. I've had jealousy and snark directed towards me because I can sleep in on weekends and don't have to deal with the kid alarm clocks at 5 a.m. And it is annoying. I'm not making excuses for that. But I think we need to look behind the snark and annoyance to the real issue. Parents often feel very alone. And most of the time, childless people don't get it, because we're not in it.
Would we be the kind of parents who treat our kid like a status symbol? Would I be the mother who'd run the family into financial ruin to make sure my girl had more Louis Vuitton bags than any of her classmates so she'd have a positive self-image? I suspect I might.
