It's a very bad time for racism in the United States. It would make sense to work toward lowering the level of racial tension in the country, rather than inflaming it. It's one thing to honour the fallen soldiers of the American civil war, but it's another thing altogether to insist on waving a flag that to so many, represents violence, hatred and oppression toward African Americans.
Last week, a young man yelled a racist slur at Kanye West's wife, calling her a "n*gger lover." As disrespectful as this incident was, it serves as a reality check for Kanye and his ilk. The man who made the N-word rhyme with "Gold Digger" for a hit song now laments having to "raise my daughter around ignorance and flat-out blatant racism." Cry me a river, Kanye! It is high time hip-hop honchos had their consciousness awakened. Jay-Z, Yeezy and many more have propagated this mess. The bitch they rap about -- her name is Karma.
Over the weekend, the Toronto Star revealed a disturbing trend at Sutton District High: Some students there have taken to sporting the Confederate flag "on bandanas, lighters, belt buckles, backpacks and pickup truck windows." Yes, the same Confederate flag proudly flown by the South during the U.S. Civil War.
