Will Firing This Homophobic Cab Driver Stem Hate or Fuel it?

This Sunday, a Yellow Cab driver in Edmonton left a drag queen stranded in below freezing temperature at 2 a.m. Realizing that his customer sat in the cab dressed in drag, the driver bluntly told him to "get out." The taxi company has fired the cab driver. But should the cab driver lose his job over this incident? What if he is merely a product of the culture shaped by fear based morality that teaches hate towards the LGBTQ community? Would firing him stem homophobia or fuel it?

Our Date With the Trashiest Drag Kings, Queens and Weirdos

It wasn't until Fay Slift's turn as Tracy Turnblad that I felt my nausea float back. With three wonderful back-up dancers including the very funny Fluffy Souffle, their number from Hairspray was pure beautiful trash. I Took My Mom to a Drag Show...and She Loved it!

My mother is going to a drag show next week. And I'm not the one dragging her there. This past summer I was lucky enough to catch Jinkx Monsoon, the most recent winner of RuPaul's Drag Race, in her cabaret show The Vaudevillians. So lucky, in fact, that I saw the show twice in the week I was there. I even dragged my mother along to the second viewing in order to score VIP seats. Mom's an OBGYN in her fifties and would much prefer a British mystery series to live theatre, but when The Vaudevillians ended that night I realized something: she had been quiet throughout the performance.

Anything Girls Can Do, I Can Do Better

At 17 I just enjoyed reversing the gender stereotypes of my peers. I was raised in a hierarchal, conservative area (read: small-town Ontario) in the 1960s. I recall a girl sitting behind me in my Gr. 12 business class piping up, "Boys cannot be secretaries!" Personally, I thought, was she for real?
