Fathers Of Daughters, Your Job Is Not Done Yet

Most fathers I know encourage their daughters by telling them, "You can be anything you want in life." But is that the complete truth? As long as women are considered sexual objects they'll always be rated as 'less than' in common society. Unfortunately, the diminished position of women reinforces the gender pay gap and makes them more vulnerable to sexual harassment and in some cases, victims of sexual and physical violence.

To the Hollywood Girls Who Don't Fully Understand What a Feminist Is

David Letterman recently hosted Parks and Recreation actor Aziz Ansari on his show who beautifully summed up what it means to be a feminist. I think even those Hollywood girls who won't call themselves a feminist will agree with this analogy: "You're a feminist if you go to a Jay Z and Beyoncé concert and you're not like, 'I feel like Beyoncé should get 23 per cent less money than Jay Z. Also I don't think Beyoncé should have the right to vote and why is Beyoncé singing and dancing -- shouldn't she make Jay a steak?"

Are the Harper Conservatives Joking When They Claim to be Women's Saviours?

In case you missed it, the Harper Conservatives claim that they have "done more for women and girls across Canada than any other government." The actual evidence simply does not support such a wild claim. Instead of addressing pay equity, the lack of which means about $126 billion in lost income potential of women in Canada, former Heritage Minister Bev Oda was more interested in freeing up $700,000 from unnecessary rent and utility bills after a $5 million funding cut to Status of Women. One out of three women in Canada suffers violence.

What Kind of Man Wears High Heels?

Until women of all ages can exist without the terror of violence, can move around at any time of the day without fear of consequence, and can enjoy equal access to opportunities in all areas of life, none of us are truly free. I'm taking responsibility to end violence, by not only participating in this walk, but by talking to other men about their responsibility to end violence and promote gender equality.

Why You Should Care About International Women's Day

With so many international atrocities committed against women on a daily basis, I as a woman in the west sometimes feel that there is very little that we can do. But living in the lap of luxury doesn't remove the sadness one feels when they see the news reports. I feel overwhelmed by the state of women and believe we should act more. This International Women's Day let us educate ourselves and the society at large.

3 Nobels For Women Don't Equal Progress for So Many

Let's not fool ourselves into thinking that our charitable efforts are turning the corner for women globally. There have been certain advances, but with the trend for affluent nations cutting back on development dollars, any gains might be lost due to a lack of international investment in the state of women.

We Shouldn't Hesitate to Call Honour Killings Barbaric

Liberal MP Justin Trudeau chided the Conservative government for calling honour killings "barbaric." But why such reluctance to call these heinous crimes using terminology that best describes them? Is it fear of stigmatizing a particular culture or religious community? Is it simply naivete of the worst kind?

A New Kind of Saudi Woman

She defends a country that she believes provides fair access to education but also concedes that many young women are still raised to become wives. Even her talented best friend will likely abandon her career aspirations to become a young wife and mother -- still the most coveted role for Saudi women.
