We need to become better aware of the warning signs of mental illness. We need to ask more questions, press for better answers, and for those who need help, encourage them to get it immediately. We need to make the kind of deep, personal connections that prevent suicides.
In the last few years, two high profile youth suicides in the Ottawa region garnered tremendous media attention and, as a new study suggests, resulted in increased emergency room visits by youth for mental health distress. But what at first sounds like an alarming link may serve as an important positive lesson.
What were the signs? This question is one that I find myself still struggling to answer five years after my son's suicide. Could the changes we notice be part of our kids' reactions to the pressures we place on them as well as the pressures they heap on themselves?
