Pussy Rioters Should Count Themselves Lucky

Posted: 08/14/2012 11:39 am

Anyone interested in just how much Russia has changed since the days when it was the Soviet Union should examine what's called the "Pussy Riot" case. Three female members of Russia's punk-rock band, Pussy Riot, are facing jail on charges of "hooliganism motivated by religious hatred."

What the young band members -- all in their twenties -- did was attend Moscow's Christ the Saviour Cathedral last February wearing their trademark coloured balaclavas and launched into an impromptu performance denouncing the election of Vladimir Putin and calling on the Virgin Mary "to throw Putin out."

As well as upsetting Russian Orthodox believers and the church's leader, Patriarch Kiril, the three were accused of blasphemy and were in jail for five months, awaiting trial. The indictment is said to be some 2,800 pages long.

Various Western leaders and human rights institution like Amnesty International and a growing bunch of celebrities and performers (like Madonna) have rallied to support the three women and deplored the lack of free speech and talked about democracy.

Significantly, Putin entered the fray. "I don't think they should be judged so harshly for this," he said on a visit to Prime Minister David Cameron in London. Putin appealing to the Russian Court to be lenient is a bit of a charade. His word is law, and any expressed whim will almost instantly be translated into action.

What neither Putin nor prosecutors mention is that the three "Pussy Rioters" were staging a political protest, not a religious protest. The state is trying to make it a hate crime against the church. While many in Russia protest the persecution of the girls, the great majority are offended at the heresy of them interrupting a church service.

That in itself is a change in Russia, which has abandoned state atheism and is now more or less devoutly orthodox. Churches that under Sovietism were museums of atheism; now booming with parishioners. The defence lawyer for the Pussy Riot girls, Nikolai Polozov, is on record saying Putin's appeal for leniency is motivated by business deals with the West and international protests. Russia doesn't need the aggravation.

Lawyer Polozov also made the astonishing statement: "Even in the Soviet era, in Stalin's time, the courts were more just." How quickly they forget! In Stalin's time, or even in the fading days of Sovietism, there'd be no publicity, no public trial, no knowledge even of the girls staging a political protest inside a cathedral. They'd just disappear.

Today in Russia -- imprecise and fragile as their allegiance to democracy and freedom is -- people can criticize the leadership. Newspapers can rail against Putin. Scandals like the crew of a nuclear submarine being drunk appear in newspapers, which would be unheard of in the relatively recent past.

The Pussy Riot girls likely have no appreciation of how lucky they are. The oldest of then was six years old when the Soviet Union collapsed, and the Russian mafia ruled the economy until Putin restored something resembling order and rule of law. Maybe the girls will get a suspended sentence, or time served.

If you want to see more, Google "amanpour and pussy riot," and wonder what would be the reaction in one of our churches would be if face-masked costumed dancers interrupted the service and charged to altar as Pussy Rioters did in Moscow.

The stain of conservatism (and I mean stain not strain) posited by Mr. Worthington is the right wing extremism promoted by the Sun in print and on TV. At it's root it is all about authoritarian government.

They want our government to be authoritarian and they'll support anyone else who is too. Look at all the cuddling up Harper is doing with Communist China. They love to see Putin clamp down. 75 years ago and these same types would have been sending thank you cards to Hitler and Mussolini.

Conservatism is dying in North America and being replaced, by stealth, with fascism.

Recycling this tired old argument again. The vicitms of injustice should be grateful they were not punished more harshly? Authoritarianism is a dangerous thing, and it is creeping into Canadian political commentary.
THe Patriarch was "upset"? His cosy relationship with the government has made him quite wealthy. When Church and State become too close authoritarianism is in the saddle. After all, god is on their side, the only side--the Right side.

Yes they are so lucky to be going to jail for protesting. The gays should feel lucky too. Talk about homosexuality, go to jail. This is a ridiculous opinion. Stop talking about how things were. Apples and oranges. The point should not be that they are lucky compared to how it was before, that is idiotic. The point should be that things are really really bad in Russia that allows a government to jail people for 2 years for protesting.

What a preposterous, out of touch, and, frankly, arrogant piece. Only someone of privilege who has no reason to protest anything can say that someone is lucky because they only get two years in jail for a political protest. This incident isn't proof of how Russia has changed- it's a demonstration that in Russia if you offend the political elite you'll be punished. Ratrher than expressing outrage over this incident Worthington prefers to lecture the girls for having offended the delicate sensibilities of people of faith. I know excactly what would happen if the girls conducted their protest in a Church in Canada- nothing. Their punishment, if any, would be meted out by the court of public opinion. And that's how it should be. You'd think a so-called journalist like Worthington would know that.

Epic logic fail. Give it up, Mr. W. Or move south, where mean, hateful rhetoric wins fans.

I remember when a dollar could buy you a comic and a chocolate bar, and have change left over.

What has that got to do with this article? About as much as the idea that because things aren't as bad as they used to be in Russia, this whole situation is okay.

there are some typos in one paragraph which should read:

"As well as upsetting Russian Orthodox closed-minded bigots and the church's leader, Patriarch Kiril, the three were accused of blasphemy, proving the kettle really is black, and were in jail for five months, awaiting trial. The indictment is said to be some 2,800 pages long, proving how little civilization has progressed when it comes to religious indoctrination."

Yes and no to being lucky, yes they are lucky it's not like NK-Russian version, but they are still arrested and going to jail for possibly 3 years for this
02:08 PM on 08/15/2012
Oh yeah, it's so much better now that they only get to spend 3 years in jail for exercising their free speech rights. The right wing loonies never cease to amaze.

Yes, things in Russia have improved. That does not mean that we should tolerate injustice when it appears. Indeed, the way that things can continue to improve is to not tolerate injustice, but to fight it at every turn.

And if this happened in one of our churches? There's a decent chance that you wouldn't even be charged. Political speech is protected, and, during a service, the building is open to the public. If they were asked to leave and did, that would be the end of it. Otherwise, you might get a citation for trespassing, perhaps. Blasphemy is not a crime in Canada, nor should it be.

Yep, these young whipper snappers ought to be thankful they're in jail instead of blindfolded in front of a firing squad. I remember those Bolshie brutes in 1917. They'd a taught those girls a lesson all right. No molly, coddling then.
