Top Tips for an Amazing Home Facial

Getting a facial done at the spa is one of life's great pleasures. It is relaxing and my skin always feels amazing when it's done. It is good as a treat, but can get pricey if you get them done regularly.

I wanted to learn more about the top tips of how to do a mask at home, so I spoke with Sephora and they shared with me the top tips for doing a mask in the comfort of your own bathroom.

There are three different types of masks. You can choose from masks that will detox the skin, hydrate the skin and treat skin for lines. I think I fall into all three of these categories at different times in my skin's cycle.

Step 1: Cleanse the Skin

Find a cleanser that works with your skin type. You may want to tie your hair back, so that none of the mask gets into your hair too. I use a shower cap to keep the mask out of my hair. Try using a cloth to wash your face as it can be a good gentle scrub while cleansing. Be careful around the eyes this is a delicate area.

Step 2: Exfoliate

When you exfoliate, go in gentle circle motions and focus on the areas that may need more attention. I tend to go to the chin, nose and forehead to get rid of the dry skin. My skin is combination so this works best for me.

Step 3: Steam

The easiest way to steam is to fill up your bathroom sink with hot water and gently dip the facecloth into the sink, then onto your skin. One tip with a steamed towel that can also be very relaxing, is to put the steamed towel around the base of your neck while your mask is on. Feels amazing!

You can also use a steamer which emits steam toward your face.

Step 4: Apply the Mask

For dry skin, go for a cream based mask or hydrating gel. For oily skin, use a clay-based face mask.

Apply the mask, and try to avoid the eye area including the eyelids. Keep the mask on for the suggested amount of time (according to the directions on the product). Rinse and make sure all of the mask is completely off. Sometimes the mask can fall into ears or even the hair line.

Step 5: Moisturizer

Gently apply a moisturizer that is suitable for your skin type and then relax! Have a cup of tea, read a good book and use this time as time for yourself.
