Jack Layton: A True Canadian Leader

Posted: 08/22/11 11:48 AM ET

The whole country is in mourning today. Mourning a man who brought charisma and charm to Canadian politics. Very few people could have managed to go out and campaign so soon after having hip surgery, cane in tow. Fewer still could have managed a brave visage and a voice full of determination when announcing the return of a new cancer. And only one could have managed to do all that with a smile on his face.

Mr. Layton did what no other federal leader has managed to do in a very long time: he captured the youth vote with fervor and enthusiasm. While the Conservatives and the Liberals remain parties that appeals to those who were alive for the repatriation of our country's constitution, Jack Layton galvanized Canada's youth to get out and vote. Whereas other parties consistently play into old white man politics, the NDP caucus has more female MPs than any other party in Canadian history.

I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Layton at Trudeau airport in Montreal, it was a little after the 2006 election, and he had just been re-elected. I was wearing a McGill sweatshirt and figured that a politician could not pass up an opportunity to chat with someone from his alma mater. I went up to him and congratulated him on his win, and with an obnoxious grin that only a 21-year-old McGill student can have, I informed him that I didn't vote NDP. Mr. Layton laughed wholeheartedly and told me he hoped I would come around to his side eventually, but until then, as long as young women like me continued to vote and remain passionate about politics he had nothing to complain about. With no witty retort prepared, I stared at him in disbelief. He then politely excused himself and I walked back to my mother dumbfounded. "He's exactly why I did vote NDP," she said smiling, as I slumped back down into my chair.

People love Jack because Jack really did embody the people he represented. While our prime minister may appeal to a certain demographic, I have never heard him be described as warm or personable. Likewise, the Liberals seemed to have elected the same charmless professorial man these last two election cycles, unable to emotionally connect with voters. But Mr. Layton was able to go out and attract people into voting NDP, with the most obvious example being the NDP surge that was seen in Quebec.

No matter what one's political affiliations are, the appeal that Jack Layton had cannot be denied. He was the last true leader Canada has seen in a very long time, and his presence will be missed by Canadians everywhere. Rest in peace, Mr. Layton.

well said, supriya! i also did not/do not see eye to eye with the NPD politically, but i think your anecdote about him being humored really says a lot about the kind of man he was.

I'm not NDP, nor do I ever see myself becoming one, but there is no denying he was a very engaging and inspiring indivdual.

i'm actually surprised you're not an NDP-er.

great article. i wouldn't have voted for him, but it does not detract from the man that he was.

Nobody's going to miss him more that his party.

By not better preparing his party to continue without him, Layton has left the NDP with a huge hole in it's identity. It remains to be seen if they can find anyone whose shoes are big enough to fill it.”

Jack was able to get the youth out to vote, because 'the youth' are naive, uneducated, irrational, irresponsible and inexperienced ... and mostly over-educated and underemployed.

As soon as somebody starts taking responsibility for building their lives, their community and their families, they realize the false hope of the NDP.

I'm glad Jack was there speaking on behalf of the poor, because somebody has to, but I'm equally as glad Jack was never the PM.

"The youth" are uneducated and mostly over-educated? LOL!

Funny you speak of responsibility, because that is something the current government never does, they never take responsibility for anything they do, and are in the process of making sure they never have to. Read Bills C50 C51 and C52. Don't listen to what they say, look at what they do. The evidence speaks volumes.

Jack was a great man, tireless defender of the poor, I am glad he was always there giving them a voice.

That said, be glad he was never in power, because the NDP would destroy our country within months of taking office.

Our constitution was not 'repatriated' , in fact, we are part of the Commonwealth and a Constitutional Monarchy.

When you or your ancestors made the choice to immigrate here, you should have considered and accepted that fact, or otherwise made the choice to go to the Republic to our south.

Supriya, you can take your politics back to wherever you or your ancestors came from, it is absolutely dishonorable and disrespectful to come to a place and demand a fundamental cultural change to validate your minority view point and ancestral history.

Or maybe you would like me to move to say ... India, and demand that Christmas be honored as a national and banking holiday?

also, perhaps you should do a little research and realize that repatriation of one's constitution is not inconsistent with being a constitutional monarchy.

I had never voted NDP in a federal election and I've been voting for 45 years. I had always voted Liberal because I didn't want to waste my vote on a party that nobody thought could win a federal election. I voted for the NDP in this last election because Jack convinced me that they had a good chance this time. And damn, they almost made it. I am so proud to have voted for Jack Layton! He left this world knowing that he truly had the support of millions of Canadians. He will be a hard act to follow.

Jack was my MP (Toronto-Danforth). My husband and I did everything we could to help get him elected and oust the disgraced Dennis MIlls. I distributed lawn signs. It is because of Jack Layton that I rode my bike to work. It was because of his initiating the White Ribbon campaign that I wrote my first published letter to the editor on the subject of violence against women. It is because of Jack Layton that I took an interest in the homeless, and ran our church's Sunday Supper program for 5 years. In other words, lives were changed - for the good - because of Jack Layton.

I don't know what faith he belonged to, if any, but he often showed up at our church, more often than not in my pew. He respected people and fought for equal treatment for all his constituents.

Jack was an inspiration and a heckuva role model for a compassionate, caring citizen. He will be greatly missed. My condolences to Olivia and the rest of the family.

I was not impressed with the Jack Layton I remember. It was a charity breakfast at the old Royal York in Toronto. Many downtown companies bought tables for the event. But Mr. Layton used it to push his political agenda. He brought on the chef, the head waiter and the leader of the hotel workers' union. Who cares who or what the union is that works in the hotel and who the chef and head waiter are. But that was Mr. Layton at his typical socialist best.

Using a charity fundraiser to push his political agenda. My respect for him took a nosedive.

What a great story, about a truly extraordinary man, who managed to still care what union is in place, who the chef and head waiter are while in the company of so many other self important people. RIP Jack, you will be missed.

You miss the point. Companies paid lots of dollars to support charities. But all Layton cared about was being front and centre with HIS political agenda. Let him pay for the event and he could push whatever point of view he wanted. But being a Socialist, he did it using other people's money and time. He never met a camera or a microphone he didn't instantly fall in love with.

Such an inappropriately terrible time to bring up what you didn't like about him...you wouldn't expect someone to talk about their disrespect for you at your funeral and in your eulogy, let him be laid to rest before you begin to bad-mouth.

If a man is good yesterday, he will be good today.

Just because Layton died, it changed nothing about him.

Everyone dies.

My heart is heavy this morning; the office is dead quiet. I get to reflect on the beautiful legacy he has birthed and the fight he battled so gallantly for me, for you, for Canadians. I hope his predecessor continues his fight and the NDP party honours his love for this country.
You had a true heart for Canada; Thank you Mr. Layton for inspiring my renewed love for this great Country.

Supryia, it doesn't matter that it took you a little longer to recognize what many of us already knew, but it's never too late. Honour the man's legacy with your next vote.

i think the whole point of the article is that she liked him, respected him in spite of the fact she would never vote for him.
