No Asians In The Vienna Philharmonic? No Problem!

Posted: 03/01/2013 12:59 pm

Dear Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra,

I hear that Asians aren't allowed to play in your famed ensemble. I first learned this by listening to Jian Ghomeshi's guest on "Q," William Osborne -- an American composer based in Germany -- who has been advocating for greater diversity in the VPO for years now.

First off, as the unofficial-unelected-self-appointed-spokesman-for-all-Asians-everywhere, allow me to reassure you, as Asians... we get it.

If I bought tickets to see The Harlem Globetrotters, I wouldn't want to see a bunch of red-haired, freckled-faced, white boys. Ain't nobody got time for that! If I go to Hooters, I don't wanna be served by a dude! I mean where would it end? Animals demanding to perform at Cirque du Soleil?!

But let's face it, your PR problems aren't going away. As Osborne pointed out: you were the last orchestra in the world to admit women. And the fact that your history is so intimately intertwined with Adolf Hitler and the Third Reich isn't exactly helping.

It's also becoming increasingly difficult to claim that Asians aren't good enough musically. After all, fully a quarter of the students admitted to Vienna's famed University of Music and Performing Arts come from Japan, Korea and China. And given the shortage of qualified local Aryans, you've actually had to resort to hiring white-only foreigners.

Luckily for you, I have just the solution!

Have Asian musicians play in white-face. Think about it. Your patrons probably can't see so well. So why not have your Korean second violinist simply wear a platinum wig?

I can already feel you squirming. Who in HR is going to have THAT conversation? "Roosevelt Wang, your audition was exceptional, but how do you feel about colored contact lenses?"

Don't worry. I know kids like these. If you had the misfortune to be born to Asian parents who had classical music designs on you as a fetus, you never had a life. You never went to sleepovers. You missed your prom. In fact, you may still be a virgin!

Asian kids who spent 100,000+ hours weeping into their cellos would consider modifying their appearance to be a very small price to pay for a chance to play in the same hall where Mozart once conducted. Plus, lots of Asians are trying to look white anyhow. Kids from Tokyo all have rust colored hair, and epicanthic eyelid surgery is all the rage in Asia.

But what of those eagle-eyed patrons sitting in your first and second rows? What about the close intimacy of chamber music ensembles? No problem. Just increase the realism.

After all, we Asians are nothing if not determined. Even if it means going on YouTube to learn special effects makeup tricks to appear 10 years older, Asians will do whatever it takes to appear more convincingly white, and do our part to maintain the illusion of Germanic cultural supremacy.

Sincerely yours,
Tetsuro

P.S. I hear Yo-Yo Ma has an opening in his schedule. He's so nice, I'm sure he'd be delighted to stay out of the sun for you :)

Does the Vienna orchestra get any public subsidies?

I'm sure they do. Ticket sales represent a tiny percentage of arts organization's budgets.

How many European players are there in the orchestras in Bejing and Tokyo and Seoul??
04:39 AM on 03/04/2013
I think the reason Vienna gets so much attention is because they are one of the highest profile orchestras in the world, and members of the group have gone on record as saying they purposefully work to exclude women and minorities from the orchestra.

Does it really matter? Asians are well to overly represented in most orchestras around the World. They don't have any black players, or Latinos either and a small smattering of women, does that really matter either? They are the greatest orchestra in the World, they have their sound and part of it is their interpersonal relationships. If the public keeps pushing for geographical and ethnic distribution in this specific orchestra, my educated guess is they would no longer be the World's greatest.

In my opinion, the things that make the Vienna Philharmonic such a unique ensemble have more to do with the kind of instruments they play and the training they've received, and less about where they were born and what kind of genitals they have.

But let's say that they have received magic music powers by virtue of being Austrians. Let's also say that there is an Asian musician whose parents immigrated to Vienna when he was a baby. This person has spent their entire life in Vienna, and they've listened to and studied with Viennese musicians. However, they still look Asian. Does this person qualify for the orchestra? What if that Asian musician was adopted as a baby by an Austrian couple and have spent their entire lives being raised in a traditional Austrian manner? Would they qualify for the orchestra then?

I know quite a few members of the orchestra, you would be surprised to learn how many run of the mill string instruments are used in the orchesta. Some of their woodwinds and brass are exclusively used by them as well, but it is a tradition of playing and a sound that has been passed from generation to generation. As far as ethnicity is concerned, big deal, the orchestras of the World are loaded with Asian musicians, frankly, so what.

One of these things is not like the other. A singer's instrument is their body, so your gender and physical attributes will determine what you can and can't sing. You're not going to find many bass soloists singing soprano roles. That is not the case with the instrumental music. A male and female cellist can play the same music.

Very effective use of satire, Tetsuru. Let's hope someone in Vienna actually reads your piece.

The VPO has been around since 1842. Even if hitler played in the orchestra personally the whole era of the third reich it could hardly be characterized as a history "so intimately intertwined with Adolf Hitler and the Third Reich".

Not true. During WWII, 47% of the orchestra belonged to the Nazi party. Compared to the Berlin Orchestra at the time which only had 20%. Also, the post Nazi purge that took place all across Germany society after the war ended was exceptionally slow with the VPO, as those with strong Nazi ties remained in leadership positions until they died. The VPO was one of Hitler's favorite organs of propaganda.

There are no longer any players in the VPO who were alive during that period. For the most part today, they are a very young orchestra, but still have that signsture sound. I am a Jew and I say it's time to get over it. The current crop was not involved....it seems every time they come to NYC, the Times is either bitching about their Nazi past, or their lack of women.
05:28 PM on 03/02/2013
My point was more towards the fact that the VPO had a hundred year history prior to the nazis followed by the post nazi era, whenever that ended, until now. The time spent associated with the nazis was far less than the time with them. I'm not defending the VPO now or then, I just prefer characterizations be as accurate as possible.

Okay, good point. I'll concede on this one point;)

I completely agree with you - I, too, was listening to the interview on Q yesterday - my thought is to have a segregated orchestra and audience. With a screen in the middle, the conductor will have to look at both groups of the orchestra and then why not a screen down the middle of the audience - so as not to offend audience members. I find their secretive historical link to Nazi Germany troubling but I hope with their recent opening of their records and files will help to change the perception we might have about them. Kudos on another article that made me think and smile at the same time!
