Smoky Edmonton Haze Results From Forest Fires (PHOTOS)

Smoky Haze Makes Edmonton Look Like Mars

Edmonton has been blanketed in a smoky, ominous-looking haze that makes it look like the planet Mars.

It comes as forest fires continue to burn in Alberta, B.C. and the Northwest Territories.

City residents found the sky covered in a murky haze that blurred the sun Wednesday and it's difficult to figure out precisely where the smoke is coming from, the province's environment ministry told Global News.

Network meteorologist Nicola Crosbie said the smoke likely moved into Edmonton from a fire burning near Edson, Alta.

The air quality index for the city showed a moderate risk on Wednesday afternoon. At that point the province recommends that its "at risk population" reduce any "strenuous activities outdoors" if they experience symptoms.

Weather conditions also provided an opportunity for Edmontonians to post several striking photos to Twitter and Instagram that drew comparisons with the red planet and even Tatooine from "Star Wars."

Here are some great photos that showed the smoke over the city.
