I'm usually a fan of dewy, glowy skin, but lately, I'm all about the matte look.
Perhaps it's because my skin isn't as bronzed as it was in the summer, and I'm not really feeling the shimmery look on my pale skin right now, or maybe my obsession with matte lipstick has now grown into a love for anything matte. (The latter is most likely the answer.)
Either way, when I first heard news that NARS was coming out with a Velvet Matte Skin Tint, I kind of freaked out a bit. NARS has always been one of my tried and true faves in terms of base — I've used their Tinted Moisturizer for years now, and their All Day Luminous Weightless Foundation is my go-to when my skin needs that extra coverage — so I had high hopes for this new formula.
The oil-free tint promises a mattifying finish without the dryness, all while blurring imperfections, reducing the appearance of pores and controlling shine.
When the press samples landed on my desk, it was easy to find my shade, St. Moritz, as it is the same shade I use in the tinted moisturizer. When I first put it on my skin, I was pleasantly surprised with how velvet-y it felt, and how smooth the application was, even without primer. I literally felt like I was airbrushing my face with my fingertips, which is virtually unheard of. It didn't dry sit into the dry patches of my face, nor did it enhance the oily zones. However, as the day went on, I saw a bit of oil creep up on my T-zone, though it was much less than when I use a non-mattifying foundation or tinted moisturizer.
But what I liked most was how light and weightless it felt, and that "your skin but better" effect it had. It's the perfect "no-makeup makeup" base for everyday, especially if you're looking for flawless coverage without the heavy feel.
