In the whirlwind that was Tim Hortons news this week (the Burger King buyout, the new cheesecake doughnut and the ridiculous Americanized Buffalo crunch pastry), there's one more Timmies creation we need to talk about.
On Thursday, the coffee company crowned Jennifer Brown of Glencoe, Ont. as this year's Duelling Donuts Contest winner. Brown's sweet peanut butter and chocolate entry, the Love Reese's to Pieces doughnut, is filled with crème brûlée, covered in chocolate fondant and topped with peanuts and Reese's Pieces Peanut Butter Cups.
It took 76,500 doughnut entries, eight finalists and a judging panel of Canadian doughnut lovers like actor Jason Priestley, musician Jann Arden, chef Anna Olson and TV host Ben Mulroney, but eventually, Brown walked away with bragging rights and $10,000.
"A peanut doughnut is an untapped resource – something that's hard to find, but that we all want," she said in a statement. Brown says she came up with the idea late at night when she couldn't sleep and wanted to pass the time. (We're going to guess she was a bit hungry as well.)
Last year's winner was The Tortoise Torte — a chocolate, caramel and pecan-topped doughnut.
