Defence Minister Peter MacKay and his wife, author and activist Nazanin Afshin-Jam, welcomed baby Kian Alexander MacKay to the world Monday.
Kian was born just before 5 a.m. in Ottawa, and weighs 8lbs., 2oz., MacKay's communications director confirmed.
MacKay tweeted the birth announcement this morning and said he is “overjoyed” with his little boy.
Many tweeted their congratulations in return, including Prime Minister Stephen Harper, Citizenship and Immigration Minister Jason Kenney, and Treasury Board President Tony Clement .
MacKay and Afshin-Jam first announced they were expecting the child in September, and MacKay confirmed it was a boy in December. Soon after, he tweeted a photo of Afshin-Jam displaying her baby bump.
The prominent parents married on Jan. 4 2012 in a private ceremony in Mexico that garnered much media attention, thanks to MacKay's reputation as one of Canada's most-eligible bachelors. Kian is the couple’s first child.
