Meena Wong, COPE's candidate for Vancouver mayor, has some ambitious proposals for the city, including a $1/day transit pass and a punitive fee on empty properties.
The community organizer, who currently works with Vancouver Coastal Health, was born in China and spent part of her childhood in Hong Kong. She moved to Canada as an international student when she was 19. Wong got involved in politics in Toronto, working for Olivia Chow, then a city councillor and wife of late NDP leader Jack Layton.
If elected, Wong would be Vancouver’s first female mayor, as well as the first Chinese person in the role.
