Billboard Music Awards 2016 Winners List: The Weeknd Thanks Prince, Canada Dominates

The Weeknd delivered a heartfelt tribute to Prince.

While most Canadians were celebrating Victoria Day long weekend, several notable Canucks were raking in the acclaim at the 2016 Billboard Music Awards in Las Vegas on Sunday.

Shawn Mendes, Justin Bieber and Céline Dion all performed at the ceremony. Dion brought down the house with her rendition of Queen's "The Show Must Go On" in a moving tribute to her late husband, René Angélil, accompanied on-stage by her son René-Charles.

But it was Scarborough, Ont. native The Weeknd received the most honours of any artist heading into the event, picking up 19 nominations. The "Can't Feel My Face" singer, who faced off against himself in two categories, won the first award of the night and took home a trophy for "Top Hot 100 Artist."

In his acceptance speech, he made reference to when the late artist Prince presented him with the American Music Award for Favourite Album - Soul/R&B back in November.

"I want to dedicate this award to the late great Prince, rest in peace," said The Weeknd. "I was told not long ago that in his last TV appearance he had given me an award, and that was like, the single greatest experience of my life."

"I love him so much. I didn't know him, but he was very close to me and he will always be an inspiration. And of course, helped me push the envelope forever and every artist, I hope. Rest in peace, Prince. I love you."

The Weeknd's tribute comes before Madonna's scheduled tribute to the late singer. Her performance aired during the later part of the telecast, right before the end of the show.

But the "Earned It" singer, who also won the "Top R&B Song" statue for "The Hills" bringing his trophy total to eight for the night, is just one Canadian who went home a winner.

Justin Bieber won the "Top Male Artist" award, beating out both The Weeknd and Drake. The 22-year-old kept his speech short, as he's "not really a talker," before quickly thanking his family and God.

"I want to thank everybody who believed in me and believes in me," said Bieber.

The "Sorry" singer stayed humble, and won the "Top Social Media Artist" award outside of the broadcast. Drake won a non-televised award of his own, for "Top Rap Artist," yet Adele emerged victorious in the quest to win some of the night's biggest categories.

Though Adele was not present at the ceremony, she sent taped acceptance speeches for her "Top Artist" and "Top Billboard 200 Artist" wins, and premiered her new video for "Send My Love (To Your New Lover)" at the event.
