It used to be embarrassing for an actress if her red carpet dress was compared to a figure skating outfit. Not anymore.

This year at the 2014 Winter Olympics, we're seeing figure skaters break out their best outfits yet thanks to superstars such as Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir, Patrick Chan and recently retired skater Evgeni Plushenko (not to mention former Olympians Johnny Weir and Tara Lipinski who are rocking fashion-forward outfits off the ice in Sochi).

From intricate headbands to "Black Swan" inspired tutus, most of the figure skaters at the Sochi Olympics have really outdone themselves.

However, with the good comes the bad and not all of our sure-footed friends rocked fabulous looks.

Gold medalist Yuzuru Hanyu went a bit too far with his love for colourful costume jewels on his black and white outfit and Australian pair Danielle O’Brien and Greg Merriman got a bit carried away with their circus-themed ensembles.

Even Toronto Star columnist Rosie DiManno lamented some of the outfits, saying, "whoever sent Spain’s Javier Fernandez out on the ice with that Satanic monstrosity in the men’s short should be shot." Ouch!

With that in mind, we take a look at the best and worst figure skating outfits at the 2014 Winter Olympics:
